There are some shoots that leave you with beautiful images, and then there are shoots that leave you with something more. My Fort Point session was definitely one of those experiences.
This shoot brought together several creative elements—a stylist, makeup artist, models, a creative director, photographers, and an incredible location—and seeing how every piece worked together gave me a completely different perspective on the process.
Going into the shoot, I was nervous. It was in the middle of the day, and direct sunlight has always been one of those areas that challenges me. On top of that, I had never worked within a full glam team before, so I was stepping into a space that felt very different from what I was used to.
But that became one of the best parts of the experience.
Being able to create alongside another photographer was incredibly educational. Sometimes working in a shared creative space inspires you to stretch yourself a little further. You start looking at things differently, paying closer attention, experimenting more, and naturally wanting to elevate your own work.
The lighting was beautiful, the location gave us so much to work with, and working with experienced models added another layer to the process. There were still moments of posing and direction, but the models also brought their own instincts and movement. I began to understand more deeply that posing isn’t simply about telling someone where to place an arm or turn their body. There is intention behind it. The pose has to support the styling, the makeup, the environment, the creative direction, and ultimately the story you’re trying to tell. That was probably one of my biggest takeaways from the day: every person on the team contributes to the final image.
The stylist brings one element. The makeup artist brings another. The model brings personality and movement. The creative director helps shape the vision. And as the photographer, you bring all of those pieces together through your perspective, composition, lighting, and timing.
Even in a model-based shoot, there is still a story being created.
Technically, the experience was also incredibly valuable for me. I was able to work through some of the challenges I have had with late-morning and midday sunlight—especially around that 11:00–11:30 timeframe—and leave with a much better understanding of how to approach those conditions. Instead of looking at direct sunlight as something I needed to avoid, I began looking at it as something I could learn to work with creatively.
I walked into Fort Point as myself, but I walked away feeling enlightened, inspired, educated, and supported.
More importantly, I walked away understanding that creating at another level isn’t necessarily about making something more complicated. Sometimes it is simply understanding how intentional every individual piece can be—and how beautifully those pieces can come together.
It was an amazing experience, creatively inspiring from beginning to end, and one that reminded me just how much I still love learning, growing, and challenging myself through photography.
And yes—I walked away with some beautiful work too.💜🌺📸
